In addition to premiering with the new Spongebob Movie, it would precede all upcoming Nickelodeon feature films. The in-house Nick branding team (and two outside vendors) pitched ideas for the opening sequence. The final concept was a combination of a few of our ideas from the internal team. I had the idea to start with the old adage “Why isn’t this thing working?”. Basically a lever (or button) that keeps getting pulled (or pressed) and nothing happens, until it finally sets something big into motion. And to up the ante, I always loved the prestige of the classic rooftop signs, like a sign in the sky. Living in NY, I saw the Silvercup Studios sign (ref. image below) so that was a jumping off point for the signage.For the animation we drew inspiration from the cinematic Pose show open. For the “Nickelodeon" part of the sign we went straight up "show biz" with Marquis lights forming the sign. For the “movies” part of the sign, we tapped into the brand's heritage and went with a fluid and “slime-like” rendering. With the concept and some mock-up frames approved, we reached out to Nathan Love to animate and bring this story to life. We worked closely with Nathan Love to make sure the final product aligned and even surpassed our original vision.Of course, with all things, once you see the answer it seems obvious but this project stands out in my mind as the one that had the most ideas thrown at it. I have never, for any other project, offered up so many different ideas and directions. &nbsp;It was a fun challenege because we were digging deep on the legacy of Nickelodeon. We also kicked off the project by reviewing and by looking at a bunch of other classic Theatrical opens for research and inspo. The end result was a great little piece of content highlighting our beloved Spongebob and getting audiences hyped up for more of their favorite Sponge. The downside of this was that, as it worked out, before this sucker could hit the theaters in 2020 the world was hit with a pandemic and shut down so everyone ended up viewing this “theatrical” show open in the comfort of their own homes instead of the theaters. Kuu Kuu Harajuku is an animated TV series that was co-created by Gwen Stefani. Ahead of the Nickelodeon premiere of the show, our team thought who better to hype the show than the producer of the show herself Gwen Stefani? Our Nick team wanted to partner with Gwen to launch and promote the show. We worked closely with Gwen and her creative team to make this dynamic music video. The song was written by the Nick team and was a mash-up of the show theme song mixed with Gwen-like melodies. We wanted to partner with a reputable music video veteran as well as someone with whom Gwen had worked with before. So our team reached out to Sophie Muller to shoot and direct the video. It featured Gwen rapping in a stylized environment inspired by the visual aesthetic and design elements of Kuu Kuu Harajuku. My team had the challenge of working on a very tight deadline to integrate animated elements (and characters) into the scene with Gwen to feel like she was interacting with them. We wanted to incorporate these elements into the scene for the length of the music video (1:21) while not having it feel repetitive. The project was a huge collaboration back and forth between our team and Gwen’s team. The next step was to design styleframes and boards, keeping in mind how the campaign would move. The 2021 Fall campaign would feature Yara Shahidi, Anthony Ramos and Jack Harlow just to name a few but the client didn’t want the initial tease movies to reveal the talent. The styleframes I designed showed only silos of the talent and close up shots of the hands holding and passing the mic. We needed a Brand guide that could be used across all platforms. Everything was up for grabs except the logo and the orange color value. We knew this would be a huge undertaking and would need an outside parner on this project to cover all the bases while still managing the internal workload. &nbsp;That was also beneficial because while we were the most familiar with the Nick brand, &nbsp;we also wanted a fresh take on it. That could come from an outside company, &nbsp;so no matter what, it was going to be a very collaborative team effort between us and our partners. &nbsp; We decided to reach out to a few companies to pitch on the rebrand. After reviewing several pitches we chose to partner with Superestudio from Argentina because we loved their off-the-wall sensibility. The big goal for this rebrand was to meet kids where they are but also give them something to aspire to. My team and I worked closely with Superestuido to find some innovative solutions for how to connect real kids with the content. We ultimately had kids interacting with our IP and stylized representations of our IP. We traded short-form storylines back and forth with Superestudio. The little vignettes would be used for Channel IDs, Nick endcards, social posts, the app, internal and external presentations as well as the Nick website. &nbsp;We wrote and rewrote these narratives until they struck a chord and we knew they would put a smile on anyones face. I oversaw the shoots, and the animation/compositing of all the deliverables. I helped finalize the brand color palette, the type layouts guidelines, as well as patterns, stylized backdrops and textures. The final brand styleguide was a huge collaboration with a lot of back and forth. We ended up with a comprehensive brand styleguide that carried the brand from 2017 to 2023. Once the rebrand was finished and delivered, it was my role to make sure it was being used and carried out properly. One of the perks of working on the rebrand was to see it’s elements roll out across all platforms. Overseeing the Nick Rebrand, that is still being used today, 6 years later, was one of the most involved and meaningful projects I have&nbsp; worked on during my career. Launch Promo Promo campaign for the relaunch of the show Are You Afraid of the Dark? We wanted to create cinematic graphics that would fit in with the dark and moody footage from the show. We used a mixture of b-roll footage from the shoot combined with some stock footage that was treated to seamlessly match the look of the show.&nbsp;For the messaging we chose a bold type treatment that was a complement to the intrigue of the show. This package was a treat to work on because the mysterious nature of the show is a departure from the majority of Nickelodeon programing that is usually lighter and more playful. <img width="2232" We partnered with Trollback for the packaging and hired the photographers Anais and Dax to shoot real kids to make the package as authentic as possible to teens. The initial package design was nice and neat. Throughout the development of the packaging we worked together with Trollback to make it a bit more dynamic and playful, adding some icons to emphazise the movement and direction of the footage. Also having a stocked library of kinetic type animations helped to bring energy to this package. The children, having no prior experience on a spaceship, have to figure out how to get back to earth safely. It was produced by Imagine Entertainment, founded by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, so the footage was beautifully shot and had a very high production value to it. IDs Every year, for October, Nickelodeon reskins the air and all the channel branding for Halloween. For this campaign we created a fully animated series of Halloween IDs that would serve to represent our IP but also be generic (I.e. Property agnostic) We wanted to do Halloween but with a twist, so we didn't want to do the traditional "go-to" Halloween characters for our protagonists. Instead we wanted to create a suite of “off the beaten track” Halloween characters for these little Halloween vignettes. We decided to partner with MADE BY RADIO because of their quirky sensibility and mastery in character design and animation. The first step was to create our "off center" character cast. We created a lovable and eccentric cast, Wolfbag (a cool looking Werewolf), Bat Fly (just what it sounds like), Flamey (a skull that was constantly on fire) and Bookie (a Cyclops flying book) just to name a few. My team and I collaborated with the MBR team to write short and funny narratives that would interact and relate to the Nick IP, as well as purely Halloween narratives. Once we had our story lines approved, MBR was off and running making storyboards and animatics, then my team and I turned to curating the styleguide so all the other departments would have exactly the elements they needed. All seasonal campaigns need a robust styleguide, to ensure a cohesive style for the duration of the campaign. We made sure the styleguide was complete with the Halloween campaign color palette, type treatments, icons, framing devices, patterns and background textures and sample frames that would complement the campaign. I remember having the most fun writing the stories for these ID's. They were all the more fun since we had an unusual set of cast members to work with. My favorite ID had all of our characters sitting on a couch watching a scary movie in the dark and eating popcorn, as the movie plays out the characters start wincing and wimpering, the scene continues to play out and the characters let out full screams and jump out of their seats. The camera finally turns to the TV to see what scared them so much,&nbsp; they are watching a really sappy kissing scene.&nbsp; Our vignettes stole the show with the unexpected characters paired with the intriguing (and humorous) storylines and the Halloween campaign style was disseminated through all other departments and platforms for the month of October. &nbsp; <img width="2142" height="1200"
